Selling your website and wondering where to sell it online? WebsiteBids.net is a potential place to do just that.

As the owner of the web based business, TCnetspace.com, I sell basic websites and offer extended services to my customers should they require them. My biggest problem has been marketing my product. I needed to find areas on the web where I could list my websites and be seen by many “potential” buyers. Sites like eBay, Sitepoint, Digitalpoint and DealaSite are some of the sites I have found during my search efforts. These sites offer some promising results, however, they all have their downfalls which I will elaborate on.

Open forum style website listings:

DigitalPoint offers a forum section where you can list your website for sale by way of forum threads. To be eligible to start a thread in the said section, you must serve a minimum forum participation requirement. Once met, you are free to list as you please! Your thread will be seen by many and the forum is always busy. One downfall: The forum is extremely busy to the point where your thread is off to the second page in a matter of several minutes and the second page is considered “old news”. The site rules state: “Please do NOT bump your thread or you will receive a minor infraction”. I received one the other day when I simply wanted to clarify my listing to avoid confusion and that clarification was flagged as an infraction. Selling a website on DigitalPoint works if you happen to have the right audience at the time you list your auction.

SitePoint offers a similar forum in their marketplace. One major difference from DigitalPoint to SitePoint is that auction listings are a paid service ($10.00/listing). In my opinion, with a paying service, there is more quality in the sites that are listed for sale. In other words, auction listings that are listed are websites that have value, establishment and worthiness. But just as DigitalPoint, SitePoint is a rather busy site too, where your listing will find itself going from the first page to the second page rather quickly causing your chances of selling your website to diminish. In my case however, paying the auction listing fee for a dozen sites that are new, will become expensive rather quickly. And given that my listings will be seen anywhere from half a day to a day on the first page, if they don’t sell in that time frame, I highly doubt they would sell at all. While considering the value at which I sell my websites, paying the site listing fee is simply not economical.

Auction style listings:

eBay, a well established site and community, has been around for a long time. I have and currently use eBay to auction off websites and must say, with the websites that I sell, eBay works well for me. “Well” being relative as it could be “better”. The listing fees are within reason but in my experience, considering the virtual nature of a website, I don’t believe the viewing audience for potential buyers is all that it could be. I have had websites listed for 10 days and by the tenth day, the traffic counter was rather low. In fact, rather disappointing at times. Another factor is that the site offers many different topic listings where someone could easily get lost when surfing for a particular item. The reason I say this is because I once tested looking for an auction listing I listed. I did a search, went from page to page in the topic I listed my auction in and was not able to find my own listing given the “time remaining” reference left in my auction.

DealaSite is not a bad site. The best thing about DealaSite is that listings are free! Another good point is that you are required to input specific details when listing your website for auction. This eliminates many unnecessary questions from potential buyers. I use DealaSite to sell websites and I have had “some” success in the service. One downfall to point out is that there is no enforcement for bidders who place bids and change their mind once the auction has completed. It’s happened to me several times where I contacted the highest bidder to complete a sale only to find out the bidder is no longer interested. It is not the end of the world but it is somewhat frustrating as other potential bidders are not bidding due to a “false” high bid set in place. If you are looking for a free service, it is one of the better “free” services out there for selling a website.

WebsiteBids.net:

Considering the drawbacks to the above services, I came up with an idea in hopes to help others, like me, who are serious about selling their website(s). I recently launched a new auction website called WebsiteBids.net where the site’s sole purpose is to auction off websites. So you have a web site, great isn’t it as you sit back and look at your own little bit of world on the internet. 1) Did you know that the name of your website url is very important. to get the search engines to rank you high, you must have your keyword in the title. Lets give an example here of what i mean. Let’s take a website that sells new age gifts, let’s call it www.spiritcharms.co.uk nice name, and seems to convey the essence of the products. trouble is the name doesn’t tell you what they are or sell. A new age gift shop should have the words new age gift shop in the url title. if it doesn’t then the search engines mark that against you. A good example of good naming is

a website store that sells Gothic item, call it www.thegothicstore.co.uk and you are laughing, the search engines love that. so it is very important to choose your name carefully. it is worth it to change your url if it isn’t going that well, they are very cheap now. Co.uk only costs around £5 for two years if you shop around. Think carefully about your Url does it say what you are or do???

2) Content content content... now this is something else that is important. the search engines love what they call "RICH CONTENT". So what does that mean? well simply put, lots and lots of meaningful text for the search spiders to get their teeth into. Don’t just stick a few lines on your front page and fill it up with pictures,video,flash content. The search engines cant read that content and don’t like it too much. also change the content often, at least twice a week. The search engines seem to know when you have changed something and come to have a look, which of course is good for your indexing.

Don’t forget to include your keywords in your rich text content, but be very careful not to over do it. The densities of your Keywords are very important, too much and you will get penalized, leave a keyword out of your content and you will get penalized for that too.

3) Links, now links are a biggy when it comes to your rankings. some say this is the most important factor of them all when it comes to the search engine ranking you in a good position. Not just any old links though. The best links are those that relate to what your own website is about. So if you sell grass seed, then good links would have grass seed in the title of the website you are linking to. Failing that then the next best thing is websites that are closely related grass seed. Garden supplies, lawnmowers ect.

Don’t just link to anybody and everybody, the search engines do penalize you if your links are scattered about all over the place, stay away from link farms, and shady or banned sites too.

4) Speaking of content, did you know that the search engines rank you for the simplistic text; they rank you higher the less education you need to read it. Yep that’s right. If you have lots of big word on your site that you need a degree to understand because you think it makes your site look good, then think again. simple is best...

Now there are a few tips for you to be getting on with and don’t cost you a penny to implement....

If you have just build a new site that offers a product or service, get a press release written about it then distribute the press release. Make sure it has your desired keyword in the title and once again spread throughout the copy. think of the one you want to purchase. It is a good idea to sign up with these online communities so you can get first-hand,
consumer-to-consumer opinion and support. There are also OEM assistance sites that can try to check the legitimacy of any OEM
software for consumers like you. Do not hesitate to contact them when you're in doubt.

Now that the webmaster's motivation is addressed, s/he must find ways to avoid competition by finding new twists to contribute to the Web 2.0 bandwagon. Much as new sites keep popping up in recent months, somehow no 2 sites are made the same and they certainly enjoy a good amount of traffic anyway. It would be better when you can boil down social networking to the context of a specific niche, like a site to exchange Mexican recipes or talk about Ferrari car accessories or business opportunities in Central Asia. You can better target the type of people you are looking for and it also gives them a sharper sense of purpose to engage with and within your site.

At the end of the day, social networking is all about sharing valuable content and making friends. The successful Web 2.0 webmaster is one who knows how to tap on this human desire to the fullest and consistently encourages such a desire to grow within the culture of the social network he has created by offering further privileges for more prominent members. DNS (Domain Name Service) is the key technology in modern IT infrastructures - without it, your business stops. Every single application now relies on DNS in some way or another.

Want to send an email? Your email program uses DNS to find the IP address of your mail server so it can send the email.

Want to print something? Your PC will use DNS to find the IP address of the printer.

Want to access your company's corporate database? Your application will use DNS to find the IP address of the database server.

DNS acts as a big electronic phonebook that catalogues all the IP addresses of the servers and printers on your network. Without it your PC will struggle to access these other systems.

So when I visit sites that are still running DNS on an ageing Windows NT server under someone's desk, I am horrified.

In many cases, DNS servers have been deployed in response to a specific requirement - someone needed a DNS server in order to implement a proxy server or a specific application required a DNS server. But as more applications and services are deployed, the DNS infrastructure is often the last thing that is considered. DNS servers and domains have often been deployed without an overall strategy, leading to an unstructured, non-resilient, and badly configured mess.

Install an Active Directory Domain Controller, and it will attempt to resolve the AD domain name in DNS. If you don't have a DNS server on your network, or it can't contact one, it will automatically install one on the DC. "Great" you might think, "it's doing all the hard work for me", but this is implementing DNS in an ad-hoc approach that might not best suit the business in the long term. For instance, the DC you just installed might be in a remote location or on a network segment that is not resilient. The fact that DNS is running on a DC means that it is not on dedicated hardware, so other applications may impact performance or the availability of the server. Installation of critical Microsoft security updates is crucial but in many cases requires a reboot that will affect the availability of the DNS service running on that DC.

When your infrastructure has grown to rely on DNS servers co-hosted on Microsoft servers, it soon becomes apparent that applying Microsoft security updates and service packs impacts the availability of not just that single DC, but every application that relies on DNS. Reboots have to be meticulously planned in order to determine which applications will be affected, and to ensure that those applications can reach backup DNS servers. Without adequate planning of the DNS infrastructure, you start to discover incorrectly configured application servers that have no secondary or tertiary DNS servers configured, or have servers configured that no longer run a DNS service. Furthermore, without any monitoring, you may discover servers where the DNS service has stopped or crashed.

These misconfigured systems only become visible when a DNS server fails or is rebooted for maintenance, and the impact can range from a minor inconvenience (the CEO can't get his email) to disastrous (a bank's trading floor suddenly incapacitated for 15 minutes while the stock market is falling).

In order to prevent these issues from impacting the availability of the DNS service, some larger enterprises are starting to take their DNS infrastructures seriously by taking a holistic approach. This involves making an individual or team responsible for the entire DNS infrastructure and deploying dedicated DNS server appliances that are managed by that team. Taking this approach enables the "DNS team" to arbitrate between different projects' DNS requirements and ensure that a structured approach is taking to the configuration of new DNS domains and servers. Quite often, companies will deploy an IP Address Management (IPAM) product to help them manage the assignment of IP addresses and automate updates to the DNS environment.

Unfortunately these companies are in the minority rather than the majority. Too often DNS is seen as a service that belongs neither with the networks team nor the server nor application teams, and so often "falls between the cracks". For such an important service, it simply isn't good enough.

I believe that taking a holistic approach to your DNS infrastructure will help improve application availability:

� Nominate a person or team who is responsible for the DNS and can support and co-ordinate DNS requirements from different projects

� Use dedicated servers or appliances to reduce outages due to maintenance

� Place DNS servers in your data centres or at the core of your network (e.g. make sure they are "well connected") so everyone knows which servers to use

� Ensure all your WAN links are resilient

o If you have locations where this is not possible, you may need to consider installing a local DNS server

� Ensure the server/appliance hardware you install is resilient

o RAID 1 disk mirroring or solid state storage

o Dual PSU's (connected to different power feeds)

o UPS

� Ensure the server has out-of-band management capabilities to assist with upgrades and troubleshooting (RILO, DRAC etc.)

� Monitor the DNS servers to ensure they are operating within normal parameters

o Graph CPU and memory utilization, network throughput, DNS availability and DNS queries per second

Following this approach will enable you to reduce DNS outages to a minimum and provide a higher level of service to your business.

How To Back Up Your Data

It is now easier than ever to back up your data. It all starts with knowing what data you want to save, and keeping it in centralized locations on your PC. If you know what to save, you know exactly what to do and to work it into a routine. Learn where your data is.

The next step is selecting what data you want to save and when. Perhaps you have documents that you wrote a year ago, but at the moment you don't want to use and yet you want to keep them anyway. Obviously such files only need to be stored once in your chosen locations. By separating your documents into when you need to save them, you'll find it easier to do back ups. It'll also take a lot less time to do a back up on just items that were updated recently, not all your files all the time.

Once you have your files separated, there's a couple of ways to back up your data. There's also a way to back up your hard drive so if it should ever fail, you won't have to remember all the programs you had and having to reinstall them again. We'll get to that in a minute.

Doing It Yourself

Here's the old reliable way of doing data recovery. You could back up your data on burned disks, and it is a good idea, but a disk can be scratched or lost. It's a good idea to utilize burning CDs with your information, but you should also have additional copies in other areas. If you burn a disk with important information, do yourself a favor and burn two copies, keeping the second one at a different location, like a safety deposit box.

Another way to do this is to get a flash drive. An additional external drive that you can store your files on. It acts as an additional hard drive. You could regularly back up your data files on these flash drives.

Both of these storage methods are rather inexpensive over time. A flash drive could cost $200 or so but is worth it for all the years it will save your data for you. CDs cost only $1 - $3 each depending on the type, and a CD burner costs as little as $50.

While using them is highly recommended, it is often the hardest habit to get into, even when you devote yourself to doing it regularly. It is easy to forget to back up your drives like this. If you don’t trust yourself to do this regularly, there's another method of backing up your files.

Internet Based Data Storage

There are companies now that will help you store your data for you.

Google Docs (http://docs.google.com/) does provide storage of your files. This would be for your Word, Excel and other documents. You can store and share your files online. Many people like it and use it for work documents. You still have to manually upload the documents every time though.

Another useful tool is Xdrive (http://www.xdrive.com/), which offers 5 GB of storage space for free. Their download also features a way to automatically back up your selected files as you need. Need more space? They offer 50 GB of storage for a fee.

Yet another utility, Mozy (http://mozy.com/) offers 2 GB free, and for a small monthly fee you get additional storage. They offer both home and professional versions of their services.

Ghost (http://www.symantec.com/themes/ghost/index.jsp), provided by Symantec, not only backs up your data, but also your entire hard drive. If your hard drive is ever wiped out, you have a Ghost to restore an exact copy of the last backup made. It'll store your software and files exactly as you had it before. It also constantly updates itself when you want it to.

Recommendations

To completely cover your hard drive, here's the recommended steps:

1. Section off files you don't need all the time, and perhaps those files you don't really access at all and store those files on burned CDs or flash drives, making duplicate sets, one for the office and one for off site. Replace them with updated versions with additional "no need" files once every two months or so.

2. Set files aside that you use every day, and set a system like Xdrive or Mozy to download in the evening when you sleep to store your data.

3. If you don't run a lot of software, or you have all your disks, or you wouldn't miss a lot of the software that you have there isn't much more to be done. However, if you do, and want to prevent having to re-install all those programs, and have an extra data back up feature, go ahead and get a program like Ghost, programmed to update at least once a month.

I may be able to help you get an answer. A few years ago, when I was in college I got an assignment for which I needed to investigate the United States Government Structure. The first thing that I thought was “I should be able to find all my answers in a government web site”. It did not happen. After researching for a while I found out that to get the information that I needed I had to visit many different places in the web. My frustration made me decide to publish a web site with all the things that I found on my research to make it easier for others.

I searched for a good domain name and I decided to get www.theusgov.com .I thought that the most difficult part was going to be to design the web site and learn how to use a web design program, but I was wrong. After designing the web site in a format that was easy to understand I decided to put it in the air for others to see. I didn’t know much about the subject so I thought that I could just send my website to a search engine and they will host it. It does not work that way. I needed to find a web host that would fit my budget. After paying for it, I could unlock the extensions of the type of program I was going to use to upload the information into it. It took more time than what it could take me now knowing how it works but, that had to be explained to me by the host company that I hired. I could start the process now.

First, I found out that search engines would not publish a web site only because it is submitted the correct way. The procedure is easy to follow but, the requirements of the different search engines are different. I was interested in Google but they were not interested in my web site. After the submition I waited more than 3 weeks before they could even look at my web site. I got a letter from Google telling me that my web site could not be published because there were a few things missing in its structure. I had to publish my website because this had become personal. I understand that search engines want to keep their search results at a good quality level but, I just wanted my web site to be published! They wanted my web site to have a disclaimer, a good description and to be specific on the structure if I wanted it to be published for free.. I fixed the web site the way they wanted it and found out that the process had to start all over again. Sometimes is better to hire a professional to do this type of job but, in my case, I was not going to spend money on a website that was for educational purposes only, and therefore was not going to generate any money back. Google decided to publish my web site after the 2nd attempt. It was great! My website was in the internet! The problem that I had now was that I had no visitors to my website.

I looked around the internet to find the way to get people to visit my website. There were a few companies that offered to direct traffic my way but I DID NOT WANT TO PAY. Why should I pay if I was not going to get any profit from my website? Even though, now Google pays for my website expenses. I kept on submitting my website to as many search engines that I could find until I got bore of doing it. I even tried one of those banner exchange programs that are announced in a few major WebPages but it did not work for me. It may have been because I was still the only visitor to my website. There was another option, link exchange but who wants to link to a web site that only the webmaster of it knew? I searched the web for answers until I got one that worked for me. The key to get some traffic for free was the content wording and its relation to its metatags. It may not work the same way now in Google but it does for some other search engines and they got me the links that I needed to get my free traffic started. I found out by searching for my web site using the description that I had sent to the major search engines. For example: I used “government of the United States”, “United States government departments” and finally a word that it is within my website description “United States Government Structure”. The web site was within the first 10 results. I started to get visitors from all over the world within a few months. I also discovered that there are still ways to make, publish and rank a web site in a good position without spending a lot of money. I decided to do everything myself and it took me more that a year to get where I am now but, if I knew then what I am telling you now, everything could have been way easier.

I spend a lot of time thinking about food; what to cook in the evening, where to buy the ingredients, how to improve my latest recipe etc... There is therefore a lot that I can say about it. Also, the fact that I am actively involved in food on a daily basis means that I can write regular articles on the subject. How often does the average person take out a car loan or new home insurance?

To assist in my research, I shall use the free Mind Mapping tool from Mindomo (image in resources http://www.flickr.com/photos/24345587@N05/2318981472/).

The small, incomplete map already has 20 topics. And the blog(s) are things that I could update on a regular basis. 20 interlinked articles on food would give my website a food based theme.

Once completed, the themed site would give me a good base from which to target niche food areas. One easy way to get niche areas is to target a subject and location. For example, if I wanted to target "sushi restaurants", the more specific "sushi restaurants london" would be an easier bet. Also, having pages about multiple sushi restaurant locations would give the search engines pages to feed on. So eventually, I could have pages on sushi restaurants in london, new york, tokyo etc...

Within these pages, I should be aware of related and similar searches. For example, if I type in "sushi restaurants" into dawjee.com, a list of more specific searches will be provided. Most of these appear to be location searches. However, at the bottom is "top sushi restaurants". The astute webmaster could easily try to target both areas at once i.e. "top sushi restaurants london". If they do that for 5 locations, then they'll have 5 pages targeting sushi restaurant locations AND 5 pages targeting top sushi restaurants. Using a good content management system, such as Drupal these pages would all be interlinked to other related sections from the site, such as the Japanese Cuisine page and eating out blog.

While this example has been performed on a fairly low value niche, the strategy described in this article could easily be employed to build a relative large site about any subject area in which the webmaster has an interest and reasonable level of knowledge.

There are some people that love to get online and snoop around your website to see what you have hidden inside your file folders. You know, the things that hold your content inside your web hosting space and give it a nice "shiny", uncluttered look? The little yellow folders!

The sad part is, if left unprotected it's as easy as going to eBay. Unlike going to eBay though, they won't have to pay one thin dime for anything they want that you've got.

There is a very simple techinque to protecting your files from some of those "snoopers". By making use of the correct CHMOD settings. Okay, you may not know what this is. At first, I didn't either. But, through making associations with other like minded people, I was clued in to this little protective "gem" if you will.

While most file folders you create on your hosting space are automatically given the chmod status of 755, this is unsafe for anything you place inside there. Especially digital downloadable items you're attempting to sell.

But, if you change this setting to 751, then the contents of the file folder remain hidden from prying eyes. Or at least for the most part they do.

Now, using this alone will not completely protect your file folders however. You should always, and I mean ALWAYS remember to put a file with the name of "index.html" or "index.htm" inside every single folder that resides on your web hosting space. The purpose of this is most inquisitive folks looking for a "free ride" so to speak will put in your URL path leading simply to your folder. Like this:

http://www.yoursitename.com/yourfolder/yourgoodstuff/

And then, if you don't have the above two securities in place, it's Thanksgiving! They've hit the jackpot. You being none the wiser, unless you constantly check your web statistics. Which most of us are a little too busy to do with running several businesses and such.

But, if you have the file folder chmod'ed to 751, they won't see anything inside of it. Add to that a blank, or whatever you want to put on it, index.htm page, that's all they'll see. No goodie gathering from you! They're blocked. Or at least to a point.

You would not believe how many digital resellers DON'T do this. It's mind boggling. Obviously, the CHMOD 751 trick won't work for every folder inside your web hosting space. Especially those that run specific scripts that need to be set at something different in order for the scripts to work.

If that's the case, then put your digital products inside their own file folder system. And we'll discuss how to do this in the next step.

One other note about "snoopers".

The term "snooper" isn't reserved for only people. Nope. Because search engines like Google excel at the act of snooping. They do this so they can index your pages throughout their own system. But, because they are merely machines, for lack of a better term, doing their jobs. Basically, they don't know the difference between your product download page and your blog. What I mean is, they see them all as content references they can index into their system.

So, what do you do? You add this line of code to all the .html or .htm pages you DON'T want included for indexing inside the search engines:

Where to put it? In between your tags within your html code.

Also, it's important to understand that you should NOT be putting links to other websites inside your download pages. The reason for this should be obvious. If not, then here's the gist of it. . .If you place links to other websites, like www.WinZip.com or www.Adobe.com onto your download pages, the higher risk you run of your download page being found via online searches. So, just provide the link, don't make it "live", or clickable, if you must include them for your customers benefit.

You can find many ways to get more visitors to your website. You can go to forums that allow it and answer a question and put up a link to your site. On some of these sites, it helps you to get more traffic from search engines. Sometimes your answer will be ideal for that person asking the question.

Someone on a forum wanted to know what Kevin Trudeau's miracle cure for being overweight was before spending all that money for his book. I sent him to my site and he read about it. Then he thanked me for saving him all that money which would have made him feel like a sucker who was ripped off. Since then, the F.T.C. Federal Trade Commission) has gone attacked Kevin Trudeau for claiming that you can eat whatever you want on the infomercial while the book says that you should not eat any unhealthy food.

Another way to create more traffic is by finding directories online and putting your link on their website. There are some companies that you can pay to do this for you. You may find that some of these site want you to put a link back to them, but others do not. These links can help you get more traffic from the search engines. There are hundreds of these directories out there. Some let you use the code to make a keyword (or term) the link instead of the address of the site. So you can make "vampire antidote" the link to your site.

Then this will help you when someone does a search on a search engine for "vampire antidote." This is better than a link that just says "www.henderson.com."Another way is to write articles and submit the article to article sites like with what you are reading right now. In exchange, they put up a link to your website. The link is usually in the author or bio information. Some only allow text, so you have to just put up your url like "www.henderson.com." Some allow html where you put in the code so the link will say "vampire antidote."

Some of these article sites gets lot of traffic so you can even get people coming to your site from the article. There are others sites that get a small amount of traffic but the links can help you with search engines. To see how much traffic a website gets, see the Alexa.com site. Also you can check on a site's Google PR rank to see how much a link from them will help you with the search engines.

There are hundreds of these article sites and they are growing everyday. I may put up a list of them on my website in the future. Also I may create my own article site in the future and I already have a blog. These articles create a great deal of free information on the world wide web. Sometimes you can get some valuable information from reading these articles. Also when you get one of these articles put up on a site (published), you can say that you are a writer who writes articles.

This way the information that is out there is not just controlled by the publishers, but it is controlled by the people, like you and me. It is a great example of the first amendment of the United States Constitution at work. It will be interesting to see the changes that happen with the world wide web being so new. Many of the founders of the U.S.A. were writers.

I check out these links and most of them have active links to my site. Sometimes a site will have an inactive link and I will contact them to let them know that it is part of the condition to be able to have my article on their site. There are sites that have problems with getting their site to do what they want. Once in a while they use the code rel=no follow" which means that they have the intention to benefit from using your article without you benefiting as far as the search engines go. I click on VIEW and then SOURCE to look for this code.

Tell the sites that do this to remove your article. You can also tell them that you will spread the word about them. You can even write an article about it and they may even put it on their site without realizing what they are doing. A few days ago on a forum I saw someone asking if the article sites actually put up a link to you or just use your article without doing anything for you so this has answered that question.
